Power Cable
Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) The life of a cable depends on the insulation of the cable. There are many reasons for damage or ageing of the insulation of the cable. Insulation is mechanically damaged during installation due to non compliance of the installation procedures. Cable insulation passes through thermal and electrical stress under load condition. The ageing process is enhanced in the presence of water. The water-tree which is the result of moisture ingress is converted into an electrical-tree under electrical stress. Ultimately the cable fails. It has been found and reported that application of DC HIPOT on XLPE and PVC leaves residual charges on the insulations. When the cable is charged for normal operation, the electrical stress increases at the place of residual charges and the insulation gets damaged and Partial Discharge(PD) activities starts at that location which causes the failure of the cable over a period of time.

In order to avoid catastrophic failure and to prevent the loss of revenue due to unplanned shutdown, AYT has capability, in accordance with IEC60060-3 and IEEE 400-2 to do the following Diagnostic Testing on the Power Cable.
  1. Insulation Resistance & Polarization Index
  2. Very Low Frequency (VLF) Testing
  3. Dissipation Factor (DF) or Tan Delta (TD)
  4. Partial Discharge (PD) Measurement
